Today, my boys and I headed down to COTA to check out the racing at the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . As the name implies, it was a race between solar-powered cars built by university engineering students. We were allowed into the paddock and the VIP seating over the pits, but since they were using the entire track, the laps were in the 5-6 minute range, and some of the cars really struggled to get to the top of the hill for Turn 1. But it was neat to see the entries, and how most of the teams held to a similar design concept, except those wacky Canucks from the University of Calgary and their solar-powered Prius. When we left, Illinois State was in first place, followed by Cal.

I get it, it’s kind of like cars but without the fun! Brb hypermiling my bike.

I would still consider it automotive fun, just a different kind of automotive fun....there’s fun to be had in trying to make the literal most out of something. They have to try and eek out every mile from these things and the engineering challenges are truly impressive to solve.
I love my gas and diesel dinosaur burners, but being a varied “car guy”, I’m just as intrigued by the technology, design and efforts needed to create these aerodynamic rides! :)

ISU leading?! That’s kinda funny, since their engineering program is not regarded highly in Illinois

My favorite is the Calgary design, since it is actually practical in the real world rather than hyper-competitive.

One thing I wish they’d do is loosen up on the rules. Let them run whatever types of panels they want, and let them use more than 6 square meters of panels - up it to 8 or something.

It looks like a car. The others look like cockroaches... as ever.
